Sutra SA(0036) Stay in your island -- (SN 22.43 Attadipa – PTS: {S iii 42})[1]

Thus have I heard:

On one occasion the Buddha was staying in Mathura city, on the bank of Batsudaka river[2], at the Mango Grove whose trees gave big shades like parasols. Then, the Lord said to the bhikkhus:

- “You should stay in your island, stay relying on your-self, stay in the Dharma island, stay relying on the Dharma. Do not stay in any other island or stay relying on anything else. Bhikkhus! Staying in your island, relying on yourself, staying in the Dharma island, relying on the Dharma, not staying in any other island or relying on anything else, you should investigate as it really is:

“What is the root cause for the arising of worries, sorrows, mental disturbing and suffering? What makes one bound to them?[3] What kind of self-projection makes worries, sorrows, mental disturbing and suffering that have not yet arisen arise, already arisen grow and increase?[4]

The bhikkhus said to the Buddha:

- “Lord! You are the Dharma ‘s root, the Dharma’s eye, the Dharma’s dependence. Please, tell us, so that we, bhikkhus, after hearing your teaching, will practice accordingly.”

The Buddha said (** Taiso 2. Middle 8) to the bhikkhus:

- Listen deeply and contemplate carefully! I will tell you. Bhikkhus! If one projects himself/herself as ‘being form,’ ‘from form, or ‘interconnected with form, then worries, sorrows, mental disturbing, and suffering that have not yet arisen will arise, already arisen will grow and increase.

“Feelings… perceptions… mental formations… and consciousness are similar.

“Bhikkhus! Is there any form that are constant, unchanged, and ever-lasting?”

(The Bhikkhus) replied:

- “Blessed-One, there is not.”

The Buddha said to the bhikkhus:

- “Very good! Very good! Bhikkhus! If a son of clansmen knows the inconstancy thus changeability of form, the detachment from desire toward form, the ending, the cessation and cooling down (of the binding flame)[5] – all forms from past to present are inconstant, stressful, and ever-changing dharmas – with such knowledge, he then cut off all self-projections/conditions around the causes of forms. Such self-projections/conditions cause worries, sorrows, mental disturbing and suffering to arise. After all of these are cut off, there will be no more grasping. Without grasping, he will dwell in the abode of peace and bliss. Such peace and bliss abode is called Nirvana.

“Feelings… perceptions… mental formations… consciousness are similar.

When the Buddha spoke this sutra, sixteen bhikkhus ceased all mental effluents, their mind were released.

Having heard the Buddha speak thus, the bhikkhus with great joy put the teaching into practice.

            Bamboo Grove, Vesali,

            The pure and quiet observation,

            Impermanence, pain, not self,

            Five, three, and sixteen.[6]

[1] The name of equivalent sutta in Pali, SN 22.43  Attadipa, means ‘Be A Light for Yourself’ or ‘Be an Island (of refuge) unto yourself.’ The summarized gatha at the end of this section listed this sutta as ‘sixteen’ (bhikkhus), which is the number of people who became Arahants after hearing the discourse. [GN]

[2] Batsudaka river, also known as Ajitavatii river, runs through Kusinagara. It was on the Western bank of this river in `Sàla Forest where `Sàkyamuni entered into nirvàna. [GN]

[3] Chinese: 云何有。何故何繫著.

[6] This gatha seems more like a summary of the contents of the sutras in this section than a list of their names. In this section, we do not see any sutra spoken in Vesali, perhaps this sutra is lost? The numbers 5, 3, and 16 in the last sentence refer to the number of bhikkhus gain total released (ceased all mental effluents) after listening to the Buddha in the last 3 sutras SA 0034-36 [GN]
