Sutra SA (0038) From Low to High -- (SN22.94 Puppha (The Flower) or Vaddha (growing) -- PTS: {S iii 138})[i]

Thus have I heard:

On one occasion the Buddha was staying near Savathi, at Jeta Grove, in Anathapindika 's Park. Then, the Tathagata said to the bhikkhus:

- “People in the world do many kinds of low jobs, all sorts of things in order to earn their living and make fortune, in this way they can become rich; everybody knows this. Whatever people know, I also say as such. Why? Don't think that I am different from worldy people.

“Bhikkhus! Let’s take an example of a tool, in one place people call it a ‘kiện tý’, in other places it is called a bowl, or a ‘chủy chủy la’, or a ‘giá lưu’, or a ‘tì tất la’, or a ‘bà xá na’, or a ‘tát lao’; people know such, I also say as such. Why? Don't think that I am different from worldy people.

“Bhikkhus! Similarly, there are worldly dharmas of the world which I know and realize, which I teach, explain and make known to people those who can know and can see. The blind of the world – who has no (insight) eye - cannot see or know them. With these blind of the world – who has no (insight) eye – who cannot see or know things, what can I do? Bhikkhus! What are worldly dharmas of the world which I know and realize... etc. until [but the blind of the world - who has no (insight) eye] cannot see or know them?

“Form is inconstant, of the nature of (causing) pain & stress, and subject to change; that is called the worldly dharma of the world. Feelings, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness are inconstant, of the nature of (causing) pain & stress, and subject to change; that is called the worldly dharma of the world. Bhikkhus! These are the worldly dharmas of the world which I know and realize… etc. until [but the blind of the world - who has no (insight) eye – cannot see or know them.] To these blind – without (insight) eye - what can I do?”

Having heard the Buddha speak thus, the bhikkhus with great joy put the teaching into practice.

[i] There is no sutta in the Pali Canon equivalent to this. The content of this sutra is closed to SA0037 above (which is equivalent to SN 22.94 whose name is Puppha (Flower) or Vaddha (Growing.) The concluding gatha at the end of this section names this sutra as ‘inferior’ or ‘low.’ In the sutra, this word is used in the context of people starting from low paid job to build up their wealth. Thus, we translate the name of this sutra as ‘from low to high.’ [GN]
