Each decade science discovers or rather invents some wonderful new technology. This has a positive effect on our lives most of the time. This is certainly true of memory foam mattresses. What are they? – (here’s a pic: http://www.greatmemoryfoam.co.uk. Well they are a specialized mattress without any springs. How does it support you then? With a thick elastic substance called visco.

This first came about when NASA needed a new form of material to support it’s space workers whilst piloting ships around the galaxy. As they would be sitting and sleeping on their chairs for long periods of time they would be vulnerable to back and neck problems, and also bed sores. They needed a new material that would prevent this. As there was none currently available they had to put on their thinking caps. They quickly got to work in a lab and began testing various chemical compounds.

And so memory foam was born. First of all it consists of a thick spongy material. It will bend under pressure but it always retains it’s original shape once the force is removed from it. That’s why it’s called memory foam. The material is also quite thick so you can’t penetrate through it. The mattress also keeps flat and even across it surface and it absorbs your body weight. This causes it to be highly supportive of your spine.

This alone means it minimizes back, neck, and leg pain, and also reduces the pressure on your joints and muscles. Apart from that it has lots of other benefits.

Further Benefits Of Memory Foam

A memory foam mattress has heat technology embedded in it. That means it will adjust itself according to it’s temperature readings. It does this by measuring your body heat. If you are too warm it will cool down, if it detects you are too cold it warms up. The mattress is also hypoallergenic. This means it does not collect dust and bed bugs and mites are unable to cling to it’s surface. This is great for asthma sufferers or anyone that suffers from bad allergies.

Another added bonus is that the mattress doesn’t need flipping over. You are supposed to do this with a spring mattress at least once a month. If you don’t it can lose it’s shape. As a memory foam mattress doesn’t use springs, it can’t lose it’s shape. Especially as the principle behind memory foam is, that it always retains it’s original shape. This will save you the hassle and energy of having to flip it over to protect it’s shape.

I hope you find this info useful if you are doing research on memory foam mattresses. For further reading on memory foam visit this FAQ page: http://www.greatmemoryfoam.co.uk/find-the-right-size.
